Un carré et un livre - A square and a book

Un petit carré bleu et vert, rien que pour le plaisir (ou presque). Réalisé en Ambiance de Fonty (coloris arrêtés, une trouvaille de la Grange à Laine qui me sert souvent pour “échantillonner”), il est extrait d’un livre dont j’aimerais bien vous parler un peu.

A blue and green square, just for pleasure (almost). It’s crocheted in Fonty’s Ambiance (discontinued colours, a bargain from la Grange à Laine with which I’ve made many, many swatches), and the design comes from a book I’d like to say a few words about.

Le livre en question est “Beyond the Square - Crochet Motifs” par Edie Eckman. Il est sorti il y a deux ans, mais je l’ai acheté bien après.

This book is “Beyond the Square - Crochet Motifs” by Edie Eckman. It was published two years ago, but I bought it much later.

Il y a deux raisons pour lesquelles je trouve ce livre remarquable. La première est la créativité dont il est l’expression - ceci n’est pas encore une compilation de motifs trouvés dans d’autres lives. Même si je pense souvent voir à partir de quelles bases l’auteure a travaillé, elle ne se contente pas de modifications mineures. Il y a beaucoup d’originalité ici, et je trouve notamment la section sur les triangles très intéressante.

There are two reasons why I think this book is quite remarkable. The first reason is the creativity it expresses - this is not just another round-up of motifs found elsewhere. Even if I often think I can spot the author’s starting point, Edie Eckman doesn’t stop at minor modifications of existing designs. There are a lot of originality in this book, and I find the chapter on triangular motifs particularly interesting.

La deuxième raison est que je trouve ce livre intelligent. Dans le premier chapitre notamment, on trouve beaucoup d’informations (assez condensées, mais bien présentées), dont certaines ne sont pas monnaie courante dans les livres sur le crochet. L’objectif est clairement de faire de nous des crocheteuses autonomes, chefs de notre crochet - et cela ne peut que me plaire, bien sûr.

The other reason is that I find this to be a smart book. Especially in the first chapter, there is a lot of information (briefly but well explained) that you don’t find in just any crochet book. The goal is very clearly to make us independant as crocheters, in control of our art - and I can only approve of this, of course!

Et en plus, il y a des diagrammes pour tous les motifs!

Primavera de Fonty - Fonty’s Primavera

Comme vous l’avez peut-être entendu dans le podcast, j’ai récemment fait des essais avec un fil de chez Fonty nommé Primavera. Primavera est composé de 50% de coton et 50% d’acrylique. C’est un fil doux, d’aspect plutôt mat, d’environ 125 mètres aux 50 g.

As you might have heard if you listened to the podcast, I’ve recently tested a yarn called Primavera from the French mill Fonty. Primavera is made from 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. It’s a soft DK weight yarn at about 125 meters per 50 g ball.

J’ai fait deux échantillons, un crocheté et un tricoté. Si les échantillons vous semblent un peu tordus, c’est normal - j’ai utilisé deux crochets différents (3,5 mm et 4 mm) et deux paires d’aiguilles (3 mm et 3,5 mm). Le fil était facile à travailler dans les deux techniques - notamment au tricot, j’ai apprécié l’apport de l’acrylique, qui rend le fil un peu plus élastique que du coton pur.

I made two swatches, one in crochet and one in knitting. If the swatches seem a bit uneven in width, it’s normal - I used two different crochet hooks (3.5 mm and 4 mm) as well as two pairs of knitting needles (3 mm and 3.5 mm).
The yarn was easy to work in both techniques - especially while knitting, I appreciated the acrylic content, which gives the yarn more elasticity than pure cotton.

J’ai ensuite mesuré les échantillons avec soin, avant de les confier à ma machine à laver. Même avec un essorage un peu rude (vous en voyez d’ailleurs les traces sur les photos - je pense qu’il aurait fallu un petit coup de fer à repasser pour effacer les plis), les échantillons ont bien résisté, et n’ont pas bougé du tout en taille.

I measured my swatches with care, and threw them in the washing machine. Even with a pretty brutal spin cycle (you can see the traces in the pictures - I think a slight touch of an iron would be useful to even out the creases), the swatches proved resistant and didn’t change at all in size.

Que dire de négatif sur ce fil? En attendant un essai grandeur nature, je ne lui trouve qu’un défaut - le coloris rose vif et profond que j’avais choisi pour mes tests est quasiment impossible à photographier!

Are there any less positive things to say about this yarn? While I haven’t yet tested the yarn in a full-size project, I currently have only one complaint: the deep and strong pink colour I chose for my tests is almost impossible to represent correctly in a photo!

Crochet tunisien en couleur - Tunisian crochet in colour

Avec tous ces week-ends prolongés, j’oublierai presque de vous tenir au courant des mes aventures de crochet tunisien.

With plenty of long holiday week-ends here in France, I could almost forget to keep you posted on my Tunisian crochet adventures.

Ci-dessus mes petits échantillons en point tunisien simple, avec des variations de couleurs (photo extraite de mon dernier bulletin d’information consacré au crochet tunisien).

Above are some small swatches in Tunisian simple stitch, with easy colour variations (the picture is taken from the latest issue of my newsletter, on the subject of Tunisian crochet).

J’étais très curieuse de voir comment le crochet tunisien se prêtait à des jeux de couleurs maille par maille, un peu comme le jacquard au tricot. Et bien, il ne s’y prête pas mal du tout.

I was very curious to see how Tunisian crochet would work with stitch-by-stich colour work, a little like stranded knitting. Well, it works very well, I think.

Le seul problème est de gérer les fils au dos sans trop les tirer, ce qui est bien mis en évidence dans l’échantillon suivant:

Mais le fait tirer un peu sur le travail après chaque changement de couleur change immédiatement les choses en mieux:

Il faut encore faire des progrès, évidemment…
