Le crochet et le rhume - Crochet and a cold

Alors, après la semaine d’activité débordante, avec un modèle à envoyer outre-Atlantique, des explications à rédiger, le fiston malade à amener chez Mamie et les cours d’anglais à donner, voici une semaine… dans le cirage.

So, after a week of intense activity, with a design to send off across the ocean, patterns to write, a sick son to drive to grandma’s and English lessons to teach, here is a week… of intense fatigue.

Fiston m’a évidemment filé son rhume, et j’en suis tellement fatiguée et râleuse qu’on dirait un homme. Toute mon énergie et mon auto-discipline s’est envolée par la fenêtre. Je regarde ma liste de choses à faire et je n’en fais… rien.

My beloved son has of course passed on his cold to me, and it makes me so tired and whiny you’d think I was a man. All my energy and self-discipline have gone out the window. I’m looking at my to-do-list, and I do… nothing.

Mais il m’est impossible de strictement rien faire, je n’y arrive pas. Et voilà comment ce châle a enfin eu la bordure dont il avait tellement besoin, depuis si longtemps. Maintenant, il faut que je trouve l’énergie de le bloquer…

However, I can’t do nothing, I’m just not capable. And this is how this shawl finally got the border it has desperately needed for so long. Now I’ll just have to find the energy to block it…

Toutan

J’échantillonne, ce qui me donne l’occasion de faire connaissance avec le nouveau fil Toutan de Fonty. Toutan est composé de 50 % laine mérinos et 50 % coton, et je l’aime beaucoup. Une grosseur parfaite pour les pièces crochetées (185 m aux 50 g) et une douceur absolue.

I’m swatching, which gives me the occasion to get to know Fonty’s new yarn Toutan. This yarn is made of 50 % merino wool and 50 % cotton. I like it a lot. It has a perfect weight for crochet (185 m [202 yds] per 50 g ball) and is exquisitely soft.

Avec 50 % de coton ce fil est moins élastique que le mérinos pur. J’ai dû choisir un crochet un peu plus petit pour retomber sur mes pattes pour ces échantillons.

Because of the cotton content this yarn is less elastic than a 100 % merino. I needed to go down a hook size to get gauge in these swatches.

Mauvais calcul - Miscalculations

Quand, de façon inattendue, votre échantillon passe de 18 mailles aux 10 cm à 16 mailles. Quand vous calculez parfaitement le nombre de mailles qu’il faudra pour le dos et le devant, mais vous oubliez que vous rajoutez 16 mailles sous les bras. Quand vous négligez les essayages.

When, quite unexpectedly, your gauge changes from 18 stitches per 4 inches to 16 stitches. When you carefully calculate the number of stitches you will need for front and back, but forget to include the 16 stitches you add at the underarm. When you neglect to try your garment on.

Et bien, vous pensez tricoter un pull, mais vous êtes en fait en train de tricoter une tente.

Well, you think you’re knitting a sweater, but you are in reality knitting a tent.

Rajeunir avec le crochet tunisien - Get younger with Tunisian crochet

Belle accroche marketing, non?

Great marketing pitch, don’t you think?

Non, je n’ai pas trouvé le rémède miracle pour contrecarrer les rides et les petits bourrelets à la taille. Par contre, je me suis mise à apprendre le crochet tunisien, et j’ai l’impression d’avoir six ans de nouveau, et tenir un crochet pour la première fois.

No, I haven’t found the magic bullet against wrinkles and muffin tops. However, I have started to learn Tunisian crochet, and I feel as if I am six again, holding a crochet hook for the first time in my life.

Les mailles sont irrégulières, les bords gondolent, je prends mal aux mains de tenir mon crochet d’une manière inhabituelle… Mais que cela ne tienne, j’étais têtue déjà à six ans, et je le suis encore plus aujourd’hui.

The stitches are irregular, the edges are wonky, my hands hurt from holding my hook in a new way… Who cares, I was stubborn at six, and I’m even more stubborn now.

On verra bien ce qu’on peut faire ensemble, le Tunisien et moi!

We’ll see what we can do together, the Tunisian and I!

Pâtes - Pasta

Au crochet on peut tout faire. Par exemple des spaghetti multicolores.

In crochet, you can do anything. Like multicoloured spaghetti.

Si le résultat est un peu plus concluant et utilisable qu’un tas de spaghetti immangeable, ce sera dans le bulletin d’information.

If the resultat is a little more conclusive and usable than a mound of inedible spaghetti, it will be published in the newsletter.

Isabella

Les jours s’allongent, on a envie de laisser tomber les gros pulls, mais il fait encore froid… Vite, un débardeur!

The days are getting longer, I don’t feel like wearing those thick sweaters any longer, but it’s still cold… Quick, I need a vest!

Isabella se crochète avec un crochet de 6 mm et un fil d’environ 180 - 185 mètres aux 100 grammes. J’ai utilisé Mille Colori de Lang, que j’aime beaucoup - beaucoup de douceur et plein de couleurs. Travailler un fil avec des changements de couleurs au crochet est intéressant, surtout avec des coquilles, des nopes, ou comme ici des “mouchets”. Toutefois, ce modèle a suffisamment d’interêt du point de vue de la construction et la combinaison de points (très simple) pour aller très bien en uni aussi.

Isabella is crocheted with a 6 mm (US J-10) hook, using a yarn at approx. 180 - 185 m [200 - 205 yds] per 100 g [3,5 oz]. In the sample garment I used Lang Yarn’s Mille Colori, a yarn that I like a lot - it’s soft and colourful. It is interesting to crochet a yarn with colour changes, especially in “clustered” stitch patterns such as shells or the (flat) bobbles I used here. However, this design has enough interest in its construction and the combination of (simple) stitch patterns to work up beautifully in a single-coloured yarn as well.

Encore une écharpe - Another scarf

Moi, je continue à buller. Dans une autre forme (tout en mailles serrées), avec un autre fil et d’autres couleurs, mais toujours des bulles, du fucus, enfin des formes qui s’élargissent et se rétrécissent.

I’m still in Bubbleland. A different version (all in single crochet), a different yarn and different colours, but still bubbles, fucus, whatever - shapes waving in and out.

Pour le nom de l’écharpe précédente, je n’arrive toujours pas à prendre une décision. Pour les francophones, “Fucus” semble bien passer. Pour les anglophones, beaucoup moins. Et en suédois, je vous assure, c’est hideux. Eleanor, mon amie, qu’en penses-tu?

The jury´s still out on the name of the previous scarf. In French, “Fucus” seems OK. In English, much less so. And in Swedish, it’s awful, believe me. Eleanor, my friend, what do you think?

Mais finalement, ce sera peut-être “Echarpe 1″ et “Echarpe 2″ dans une petite collection d’écharpes qui, normalement, compterait trois modèles. Mais le troisième modèle, très différent, est loin, si loin. Pour l’instant, je reste obsédée par les ondulations. Qui s’élargissent, se rétrécissent…

Finally, it will perhaps just be “Scarf 1″ and “Scarf 2″ in a small scarf collection which is planned to contain three designs. However, the third one, which will be quite different, is still far, far away. At the moment, I’m obsessed by the waves - in, and out…

Fucus vesiculosus

Depuis quelques jours je pensais que je crochetais des bulles. Mais hier, j’ai vraiment regardé l’écharpe qui s’enroulait sur mes genoux, et je me suis rendue compte à quoi elle me faisait penser. Le fucus vésiculeux que je trouvais sur les rives de la Baltique quand j’y jouais enfant, pendant des étés qui duraient une éternité. On le trouvait flottant dans l’eau, ou remonté sur la plage ou la roche par le vent, et on s’amusait á faire exploser les petites bulles remplies d’air d’entre nos doigts.

These past few days, I thought I was crocheting bubbles. But yesterday I took a long hard look on the scarf curling up on my knees, and I realized what it really made me think of. The bladder wrack that I found on the shores of the Baltic sea when I played there as a child, during summers that lasted forever. We found it floating on the water or thrown onto the beach or the rocks by waves and wind, and we had a lot of fun pressing the little bubbles filled with air between our fingers to make them burst.

Ce n’est peut-être pas la plus belle des algues, mais pour moi c’est un concentré de souvenirs heureux. Une seule question démeure: Est-ce que “Fucus” est trop vilain comme nom d’un modèle? Qu’en pensez-vous?

There may be more beautiful seaweeds, but to me this one concentrates many happy memories. Now I only have one question: Is “Fucus” a bad name for a design? What do you think?
